Don't let anyone kid you: the Social Security disability process is incredibly difficult, slow and frustrating. It's all we do and we've assisted hundreds of claimants.
Here's the usual process and waiting times:
1) File an application and wait about 4 months for the initial decision. Two-thirds of applications will be mechanically denied.
2) File an appeal and wait up to 20 months to get before a judge. Critical cases may be expedited but it's hard to get a faster hearing.
3) Use the wait time to gather medical evidence and prepare your case. This is where you will appreciate your representative or attorney most.
You will never pay your representative a fee unless you win and also recover back pay from Social Security. Initial consultations are free and all work we do is without cost until you win and recover past due benefits.
In fact, we will never ask you for money. If your case is successful, Social Security will pay our fee directly--after you are paid.
